The white paint debate
Sep 09, 2021
Confession: I’m guilty of taking home hundreds of samples from the paint aisle at Bunnings, agonising over them for hours then throwing the whole lot straight in the bin.
Choosing a white paint can feel totally overwhelming because there are literally hundreds of slightly different colour variations.
Don’t be like the thousands of people who have lost sleep and watched money go down the drain from choosing the wrong colour.
Follow my top 3 tips to make sure you get it right from the get-go:
- Choose your main wall colour last, after you’ve selected everything like flooring, tiling and cabinetry. There are only limited flooring colours to choose from so it’s easier to find a white to match the floor than it is to find a floor to match the white.
- Decide if you want a cool white or a warm white. When selecting white paint there’s a fine line between a fresh, relaxing vibe and looking like you’re living in a stark science lab, so you’ll want to work out which type white will create the feel you’re going for.
- Try before you buy! Paint looks different in every single house and every wall depending on the lighting (just to make things a little trickier!), so pick a few tester pots from Bunnings and try them out on different walls throughout your house.
COOL WHITES
Cool whites carry blue or grey undertones and will give you a feeling of a larger space within the room.

WARM WHITES
Warm whites often carry subtle peach, pink, or yellow undertones and bring a relaxed warmth into your home.
If you’re unsure if you want a cool or warm white paint, we’ve got you. Dulux Vivid White is neither – it’s a neutral white with no undertone. It’s an ultra-pure white.
